What role do human beings play in this hypothesis.

In medicine and health, there is some evidence that when researchers get closer to patients, significant conversations develop about the priorities for patients, which in turn may lead to new areas of research, for example patient-focused research related to living with the condition.

INVOLVE, a national advisory group funded by the UK National Institute for Health Research, reports that involving service users helps at all stages of a research project, from developing the research question through to disseminating the results. The benefits of the direct involvement of service users in research have been identified as follows :

As such, by taking a hypothesis testing approach, Sarah and Mike want to generalize their results to a population rather than just the students in their sample. However, in order to use hypothesis testing, you need to re-state your research hypothesis as a null and alternative hypothesis. Before you can do this, it is best to consider the process/structure involved in hypothesis testing and what you are measuring. This structure is presented .

Most organizations start with an idea of how to serve customers better. Apple’s engineers began working on the iPod by looking at the available technology and thinking about how customers would like to have their music more available, as well as more affordable, through downloading.

Steps of the Scientific Method in Psychology Research

Many companies think about potential markets and customers when they start. John Deere, for example, founded his company on the principle of serving customers. When admonished for making constant improvements to his products even though farmers would take whatever they could get, Deere reportedly replied, “They haven’t got to take what we make and somebody else will beat us, and we will lose our trade.” He recognized that if his company failed to meet customers’ needs, someone else would. The mission of the company then became the one shown in .

The DOE (JBEI) is a partnershipled by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory(LBNL) that leverages the scientific expertise, resources, and support of four national laboratories and threeacademic institutions. This multiinstitutionalresearch team is using the latest techniques inmolecular biology, chemical and genetic engineering, andcomputational and robotic technologies to develop advancedbiofuels. JBEI consolidates all biomass-to-biofuels researchareas within three scientific divisions and one technologiesdivision at its research center in Emeryville, California. Since2007, JBEI has been addressing key roadblocks to convertinglignocellulosic biomass into advanced fuels through an integrated, multidisciplinary approach.

Developing the Research Hypothesis

JBEI brings the sunlight-to-biofuels pipeline under oneroof in four interdependent research divisions that focuson (1) designing and developing new bioenergy crops,(2) enhancing biomass deconstruction, (3) developingroutes to new biofuels through synthetic biology, and(4) creating technologies that advance biofuels research.

Researchers in JBEI's Feedstocks Division are improving theunderstanding of genes and enzymes involved in the synthesisand modification of plant cell walls using well-characterizedgenomes and genetic-engineering tools for rice and Arabidopsis(a small flowering plant related to mustard). These two modelsystems are ideal for research because their development fromseed to mature plant takes only weeks or months, rather thanthe year or more required for crops such as switchgrass andpoplar. Genetic insights from rice (a model for grasses andother monocots) and Arabidopsis (a model for trees and otherdicots) will accelerate the breeding of new energy feedstocks(see figure, Developing Better Plants for Biofuels, below). This knowledge is used in developing specialized fuel crops that areoptimized for deconstruction into sugars and fermentation intobiofuels and can thrive with little fertilization or irrigation onland not suitable for growing food crops.

How to Set Up a Hypothesis Test: Null versus Alternative

Early responses to Krashen's theory (Gregg, 1984; McLaughlin, 1987) based their critique in the claim that Krashen's constructs (such as the learning/acquisition distinction) are not empirically verifiable and hence not falsifiable. However, the concept of falsifiability, as the means for distinguishing science from non-science (Popper, 1959), has itself come in for considerable criticism, (e.g., Lakatos, 1970; Schumann, 1993). Feyerabend (1981) contends that adhering to strict empiricist methodologies can inhibit scientific progress. Indeed, it is disputed whether linguistics can or should be regarded as a science (see Harris, 1993).
