According to the researchers behind, Brainball "... dwells in the realm betweenart and research, entertainment and science, method and object" . They present a game with a tangible userinterface in which two opponents sit on a chair separated by a table. A steelball lies between them. The players wear specialized BCIsmounted on their foreheads and somewhat similar to the NIA system (see Section). The EEG signal is analyzed into its frequency components and the ballwill roll away from the most relaxed player (drawing on the correlation betweenalpha activity and relaxation). While playing, the players are able to see ascreen visualizing their EEG activity. The creators of Brainball interestinglyreports that playing the game leads to increased relaxation by measure of bothGalvanic Skin Response (GSR) and self reports. Brainball experienced a lot of attentionincluding honorary mention at Ars Electronica 2000 and 100+ appearances onTV. However, it remains a niche product within gaming and entertainment due tothe dependency on specialized hardware (BCI, ball, screen, etc). TheBrainball BCI system is commercially available through a Swedishcompany under the name Mindball (Figure ).
32. I hope you don't try circulating chapters of your dissertationto your committee members as you are writing them. I find this practiceto be most annoying and one that creates considerable problems for thestudent. You must work closely with your dissertation director. He/sheis the person you want to please. Develop a strategy with the dissertationdirector regarding how and when your writing should be shared. Only afteryour dissertation director approves of what you have done should you attemptto share it with the rest of the committee. And by then it's time for thedefense. If you prematurely share sections of your writing with committeemembers you will probably find yourself in a situation where one committeemember tells you to do one thing and another member says to do somethingelse. What should you do? The best answer is not to get yourself into sucha predicament. The committee meeting (the defense) allows the concernsof committee members to surface in a dialogical atmosphere where opposingviews can be discussed and resolved.
In this section, the main question thatneeds to be answered is what has been written before on your topic? Inparticular, you are interested in what has been written concerning anyrelationship between your dependent variable and your independentvariables. In a normal academic paper, you need to demonstrate that youknow every detail of the material important to your hypotheses. However,in this class I am only asking you to produce a minimal literature review.
This note describes how to organize the written thesis which is the centralelement of your graduate degree. To know how to organize the thesis document, you first have to understand what graduate-level research is all about, so thatis covered too. In other words, this note should be helpful when you are justgetting started in your graduate program, as well as later when you start to writeyour thesis.
The distinguishing mark of graduate research is . The thesis is a formal document whose sole purpose is toprove that you have made an original contribution to knowledge. Failure toprove that you have made such a contribution generally leads to failure.
If you can keep these ideas in mind while you're thinking through yourresearch you stand an excellent chance of having your research projectturn out well.
This is a introduction to what the thesis is all about -- itis just a description of the contents of each section. Briefly the question (you will be stating the question in detail later), some of thereasons why it is a worthwhile question, and perhaps give an overview of yourmain results. This is a birds-eye view of the answers to the main questionsanswered in the thesis (see above).
A brief section giving background information may be necessary, especiallyif your work spans two or more traditional fields. That means that your readersmay not have any experience with some of the material needed to follow yourthesis, so you need to give it to them. A different title than that given aboveis usually better; e.g., "A Brief Review of Frammis Algebra."
Present the thesis topic to a prospective thesis director and be prepared to discuss the proposed research. The professor who serves as the thesis director should be interested and knowledgeable in the proposed area of study. A professor may choose to serve or not serve as a thesis director.
The thesis committee is responsible for providing feedback to the student during all phases of proposal and thesis development. The thesis committee will determine when a thesis has satisfactorily met standards for acceptable research. A minimum of two graduate faculty members must serve on the committee. Including the director, there must be an odd number of committee members serving on the committee. One member of the thesis committee must be a Cameron University graduate faculty member from outside the student's department of study.
This section describes the main elements of a written thesis at the bachelor’s and master’s levels. Although the specific structure described here is most relevant for empirical theses, much of the advice is also relevant for theoretical work. Please note that the formal requirements vary between different disciplines, and make sure to confer the guidelines that apply in your field.
Writing of a thesis is a long yet rewarding process. During undergraduate and early graduate coursework one may find there are several areas of intellectual inquiry that would be interesting to pursue. These areas of interest are good sources of potential research topics. Many students develop ideas used in course research papers during their master's study. Select a topic of interest and develop general ideas of how to go about conducting the study. The ideas should be written down and reviewed by the faculty member who may direct the thesis. The professor will most likely provide additional information, especially as it relates to the specific topic, title, and procedures. Faculty members may also provide direction to relevant literature. Early ideas for research projects should evolve over time. Be prepared for such changes and recognize that this is an integral part of planning research.
We look at the t-statistic (and its significance) for each independentvariable. These tell us whether each IV is significantly related to the DV,controlling for the other variables in the model.
