This project, based in Aklan, Philippines, originated with the Department of Environment & Natural Resources (DENR). It utilizes “abandoned biomass” as feedstock for charcoal to reduce the cutting of forest trees - thus, curbing deforestation. Leaves, twigs, branches, fronds, woodchips, husks, and rice hulls are carbonized and made into briquettes - using cassava or corn starch as binder - without use of electricity or power.
It is designed for replication in Philippine communities and other tropical countries, particularly those with dwindling forest reserves due to charcoal-making. Proponents are NGO Sustainable Rural Enterprise (SRE) and Kalibo Save the Mangroves (KASAMA) Foundation.
